N. Carolina members turn out for field training weekend
Johnston Co. Cadet Squadron focuses on advanced ground teams, urban direction finding, mission information officers

NORTH CAROLINA -- When a cold front slammed into central North Carolina in mid-September, bringing with it more than 2 inches of rain and several tornadoes, the National Weather Service attributed much of the desperately needed precipitation to the remnants of tropical storm Humberto.

But weather wasn't on the mind of members of the Johnston County Cadet Squadron, as well as officers and cadets from several nearby units, when they began signing in at the Johnston County Airport at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15.
They were there, instead, for a field training weekend.
The Johnston County squadron's emergency services officer, Maj. Brian Buczkowski, said the emphasis for the training weekend would be directed toward advanced ground teams, urban direction finding, communications and mission information officers.
Buczkowski planned the training sessions with the assistance of Capt. Jerry Simmons, the squadron's commander.
"We have a busy weekend planned for the cadets and officer members," Buczkowski said. "Those participating in the training also planned to camp on the airport property."
The first flight involved trainees being transported to Raven Rock State Park near Sanford, N.C., where search techniques -- including topographical map reading, compass direction finding and other ground team specialties -- were taught.
Meanwhile, a team of cadets led by Cadet Sgt. Noah Hoffer set up a mission base radio system, which included HF and VHF radio communications. Hoffer's assistants were receiving training in communication unit leader and mission radio operator training tracks.
Sunday morning, cadets were directed to find previously planted Emergency Locator Transmitters. The UDF team was required to report in to mission base every 15 minutes giving Global Position System coordinates.
